Presented in honor of Orson K. Miller, Jr., for his substantial contributions to mycology in North America and worldwide, the papers in this volume are organized into three parts: the systematics of higher fungi in over 20 genera; fungal diversity which focuses primarily on the great coniferous forests of western North America; and the ecology of higher fungi. Non-mycological treatments of fungi in forest ecosystems often make broad-sweeping categorizations as to ecological roles, with major groups classified as helpful or harmful, regardless of the details of the situtation. The volume hopes to override this generic subterfuge by revealing the diversities and intricacies of fungal form, function, evolutionary history, and distributions in these habitats.
