The family Metzgeriaceae (Hepaticae) is represented in tropical America by one genus, Metzgeria, and 57 species. The species of this family are distinguished according to width of thallus, number of laminal cells from midrib to margin, number o dorsal and ventral epidermal cells in the midrib, number of medulla cells, size of laminal cells, verruculosity of the cuticle, types and disposition of hairs in the thallus, gemmae, an sexuality. They are mostly epiphytes in humid, submontane to upper montane tropical forests, between 500-4000 m elevation. Fifteen new synonyms are proposed.
